Entry Into Bhutan

There are two entry points into Bhutan:

  1. By Druk Air (the only national airline) into Paro Airport.

There are flights to and from Bangkok, in Thailand, Delhi and Kolkata (Calcutta) in India, and Kathmandu in Nepal. There are however, no domestic flights. Flight schedules are available from Druk Air’s website. As per Bhutan Government rule, it is mandatory to travel at least one way by Druk Air. It can be either, entry, exit, or both.

  2. By road to Phuentsholing, through the State of West Bengal. The nearest airport in India is Bagdogra in the district of Darjeeling.

NB: The tourism authority of Bhutan is exploring additional entry and exit points.

VISA FORMALITIES

All visitors to Bhutan except for Indians, require a visa. All visas are issued from Thimphu. A visa clearance has to be obtained before departing for Bhutan. Visas are issued only when you arrive in the country, either at Paro airport or (if by road) at Phuentsholing. Visa details have to be sent a month prior to arrival. Kiga will be providing you with the visa forms in which you need to fill in the required information or you can visit our website and fill in the forms provided for you. We also need you to send us a Xerox copy of your passport along with the visa fee of US$20.

Your visa clearance will be faxed to you. The actual visa will be issued and stamped on the passport on arrival. You are also advised to bring along two passport photographs which you need to present on arrival to the Visa Officer at the point of entry.

Visas are granted for a 15 day period. Extensions can be obtained in Thimphu at a cost of $15. After we receive all the details, Kiga will be making all the necessary arrangements.

The ancient sages called the Himalayas lhayuel—abode of the gods. Here, in the lap of the world’s highest mountains, lie the sacred caves, temples, and monasteries, where great men and women have come to discover the ultimate truth, the path to inner peace and sublime happiness. Honoring that tradition, Kiga offers programmes that are spiritually nourishing and physically invigorating. Ki in Bhutanese means Peace. Ga is the word for Happiness. Put together KIGA reflects our company’s aspirations for the promotion of compassion toward all sentient beings and the pursuit of Peace and Happiness.
