WHAT HAS BHUTAN TO DO WITH HAPPINESS AND WHAT IS GNH?
Bhutan is the only country that pursues happiness as the goal of development rather than limitless economic growth in a world with limited natural resources. GNH or Gross National Happiness is the philosophy or the development model of the Royal Government, which is founded on 4 pillars of societal progress. These are economic growth, ecological conservation, cultural promotion and good governance. GNH has now inspired an active international discourse spearheaded by the UN on the urgent need of a sustainable, inclusive and holistic development paradigm to guide the much-troubled human society. The UN has declared 20th March as the International Day of Happiness, passed a resolution on happiness and hosted a high level meeting to promote happiness.
